Esquire Assistance Program (EAP)Free to Iowa's legal community. |
The Esquire Assistance Program (EAP) is a license benefit—available at no cost to all Iowa-licensed lawyers, judges, and court reporters, as well as their immediate family members. No matter your practice setting, seniority, or geographic location, you have full access to the program’s wide range of services.
Using the program is simple. To get started, call 1-800-EAP-IOWA. The service is available around the clock, 365 days a year. When you call, you’ll need to identify yourself as an Iowa lawyer, Iowa court reporter, or a family member of an Iowa lawyer or court reporter. Judges may choose to identify themselves as lawyers if they prefer.
From there, you will be connected directly to a counselor—no long menu of prompts, no need to wait for an office to open. All information you provide is confidential. It will not be shared with the OPR, your employer, or anyone else, except as required by law in rare situations (such as imminent harm).

This combination of services is rare in any professional assistance program. It is designed to help with not just one type of challenge, but the interconnected realities of modern life. The EAP’s strength lies in addressing the whole person. By offering resources that span mental health, financial guidance, caregiving, and even legal consultations, it recognizes that professional performance is deeply linked to personal well-being.
EAP and ILAP: A powerful combination
It’s important to note that the Esquire Assistance Program is not the same as the Iowa Lawyer’s Assistance Program (ILAP)—and the two are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they are complementary and often work best in tandem.
· ILAP focuses on peer support from other lawyers and judges, particularly for challenges such as substance use, mental health, and professional stress. Its strength lies in the ability to connect you with trained peers who truly understand the unique pressures of legal work.
· EAP provides immediate, around-the-clock professional assistance from masters-level counselors, plus a wide array of personal, financial, and legal resources. Whether you call at 2 p.m. or 2 a.m., a professional will answer and help.
