Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are fundamental American values. New inhabitants landed upon these shores in search of a land of opportunity where they hoped to rise as far as their God-given talents would allow, free from harassment or persecution due to their identities or beliefs. Lawyers played a key role in enshrining these values in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. This CLE program explores the contemporary relevance of DEI programs; examines the evolution of DEI, with a historical focus on who has and who has not been able to claim the full benefits of freedom and equality in America; and emphasizes the lawyer’s role in improving the administration of justice and upholding the nation’s fundamental values in light of the modern-day attacks on DEI.
