Beginning July 1, most Iowa civil filing fees increase by $20. Among the most common changes, the filing fee for a district court petition increases from $195 to $215, and the filing fee for a small claims action increases from $95 to $115.
The filing fee increases were enacted as part of House File 2770, the judicial branch appropriations bill signed into law earlier this month. In addition to the filing fee changes, the legislation establishes Iowa's new Attorney Loan Repayment Program, designed to encourage attorneys to practice in Iowa, particularly in rural and underserved areas, and increases compensation for State Public Defender contract attorneys, including attorneys accepting criminal and juvenile appointments, by $4 per hour for appointments made on or after July 1.
Under the statute, the additional revenue generated by the $20 filing fee increase is deposited equally into the Attorney Loan Repayment Program Trust Fund and the Indigent Defense Fund.
