Iowa attorneys prepare to unite for National Law Day of Action in May

Attorneys across Iowa are preparing to join colleagues nationwide in recognizing Law Day on May 1 through the National Law Day of Action, a coordinated effort to visibly demonstrate support for the Constitution, the courts, and the rule of law.

The Iowa State Bar Association (ISBA) is encouraging members to participate in events taking place across the state, where attorneys will gather to reaffirm the Iowa Lawyer’s Oath. This oath, taken upon admission to the bar, reflects a shared commitment to uphold constitutional principles, defend due process, and maintain the integrity of the legal system.


Des Moines event:

  • Date: Friday, May 1
  • Time: 9 a.m. (Oath to be administered around 9:15 a.m.)
  • Location: Iowa Judicial Branch Building, 1111 East Court Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50309
    Directions and maps of the Court Avenue detour to the judicial branch building are available on the Iowa Judicial Branch website.

The event will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside the building in case of inclement weather. No RSVP is required.


East Moline event:

  • Date: Friday, May 1
  • Time: Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m.
  • Location: The Bend Event Center, 910 Bend Blvd, East Moline, IL 61244

The event will be held in conjunction with the 2026 Law Day Luncheon jointly sponsored by the bar associations of Rock Island County, Illinois, and Scott County, Iowa. RSVP is required. Please email j.kincaid@silvislaw.com to RSVP or ask questions.


Cedar Rapids event:

  • Date: Friday, May 1
  • Time: 9 a.m.
  • Location: Linn County Courthouse, 51 3rd Ave., Cedar Rapids, IA 52401

The event will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside the building in case of inclement weather. No RSVP is required.


Waterloo event:

  • Date: Friday, May 1
  • Time: Noon
  • Location: Black Hawk County Courthouse, Courtroom 301, 316 E. 5th St., Waterloo, IA 50703

This event will be held in Courtroom 301. No RSVP is Required


Sioux City event:

  • Date: Friday, May 1
  • Time: 10 a.m.
  • Location: Woodbury County Courthouse, Courtroom 620 Douglas St, Sioux City, IA 51101

The event will be held in the Woodbury County Courthouse Rotunda. No RSVP is required.


Logan event:

  • Date: Thursday, May 7
  • Time: 9:45 a.m.
  • Location: Harrison County Courthouse, 111 N 2nd Ave, Logan, IA 51546

The event will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside the building in case of inclement weather. No RSVP is required.


Council Bluffs event:

  • Date: Friday, May 1
  • Time: 10 a.m.
  • Location: Pottawattamie County Courthouse, 227 S 6th St, Council Bluffs, IA 51501

The event will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside the building in case of inclement weather. No RSVP is required.


Harlan event:

  • Date: Tuesday, May 5
  • Time: 9 a.m.
  • Location: Shelby County Courthouse, 612 Court St., Harlan, IA 51537

The event will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside the building in case of inclement weather. No RSVP is required.


Clarinda event:

  • Date: Friday, May 1
  • Time: 10 a.m.
  • Location: Page County Courthouse, 112 E Main Street, Clarinda, IA 51632

The event will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside the building in case of inclement weather. No RSVP is required.


Iowa City event: 

  • Date: Thursday, May 7
  • Time: 4 p.m.
  • Location: Johnston County Courthouse, 417 S. Clinton St., Iowa City, IA 52240

The event will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside the building in case of inclement weather. No RSVP is required.


Glenwood event:

  • Date: Friday, May 1
  • Time: 3 p.m.
  • Location: Mills County Courthouse, 418 Sharp St, Glenwood, IA 51534

The event will be held outside, weather permitting, or inside the building in case of inclement weather. No RSVP is required.


Additional local events are being organized throughout Iowa, with ISBA Board of Governors members helping coordinate gatherings in their communities. Members are encouraged to connect with colleagues or local leadership if they are interested in attending or organizing a nearby event.

Family members, friends, and community supporters are also welcome to attend, reinforcing the broader importance of these principles beyond the legal profession.

As May 1 approaches, the ISBA invites all members to take part in this statewide and national moment of unity, reaffirming the values that define the profession and strengthen the administration of justice.
