The ABA has issued its first ethics guidance on a lawyer’s use of AI tools. The American Bar Association Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility issued a press release on July 29. Formal Opinion 512 states in part, “To ensure clients are protected, lawyers using generative artificial intelligence tools must fully consider their applicable ethical obligations, including their duties to provide competent legal representation, to protect client information, to communicate with clients, to supervise their employees and agents, to advance only meritorious claims and contentions, to ensure candor toward the tribunal, and to charge reasonable fees.” The opinion is 15 pages in length and can be found on the ISBA website, along with an archive of Iowa Ethics Opinions.
