Message from President Levis on LawPAC

“On Monday, Sept. 24, I went to my first LawPAC meeting. Although I had contributed to LawPAC in the past, I had never attended any of the LawPAC Board meetings and frankly, never paid attention to how the board made campaign contributions. Because this is an election year and I am the current president of the Bar, I thought I'd crash the meeting and see how LawPAC spends its money.

“Compared with other PACs with hundreds of thousands of dollars, the Iowa LawPAC is pretty small. Frankly, despite the small size of the LawPAC contributions, I was absolutely amazed that Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver, House Majority Leader Chris Hagenow, Senate Minority Leader Janet Petersen and longtime House leader Jo Oldson spent several hours of their time meeting with the lawyers of LawPAC. It clearly showed me that our legislative leaders respect The Iowa State Bar Association and its legislative team, not only for the money the candidates receive from LawPAC, but also for the leadership Iowa lawyers provide to state government.

“If you haven't contributed money to LawPAC, I’d encourage you to do so. Any amount will be appreciated.” Click here then on “Store” and finally on “Contributions” to choose the level of giving you want.

ISBA expands content of Jury Verdict Reporter service

The ISBA is making major changes to the Jury Verdict Reporter service.

The new reporter will be sent to subscribers through the ISBA’s Engage program around the 10th of the month. It now features all civil jury trials around the state provided through an arrangement with the Iowa Judicial Branch. The previous service relied on voluntary submission of cases on a weekly basis.

The new reporter also features expanded summaries, additional case-related documents and identification of judges and experts. From the summaries, attorneys will be able to link back to the case and access ancillary documents related to a case. Included are the amount of the verdict, defendant's and plaintiff's briefs and jury instructions. See this month's report.

To subscribe, you must be a member of the YLD, or the Alternative Dispute Resolution or Litigation Sections. If you have any suggestions for improvement, please contact Harry Shipley at
