Chief Justice Cady delivers Condition of the Judiciary speech

This morning in the Iowa House Chambers, Chief Justice Mark Cady of the Iowa Supreme Court addressed a joint convention of the General Assembly on the condition of the Judiciary.

Cady's remarks highlighted the value of Iowa's 47 problem -solving courts and innovative approaches to delivering justice. He also addressed the challenges the court faces moving forward.

A delegation of ISBA officers spent the day meeting with state leaders including: Governor Kim Reynolds, Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg and legal counsel to the governor Colin Smith; Senate President Jack Whitver, Majority Leader Bill Dix and Minority Leader Janet Petersen; and House Speaker Linda Upmeyer, Majority Leader Chris Hagenow and Minority Leader Mark Smith. ISBA to seek periodic cost-of living adjustments for indigent defense compensation

The 2018 Iowa legislative session got underway on Monday, and despite the very difficult state budget situation, The Iowa State Bar Association is dedicated to pursuing an increase in compensation for court-appointed attorneys and a periodic cost-of-living adjustment.

The ISBA supports adequate compensation in order to ensure that the state meets its constitutional obligation to provide competent assistance of counsel to indigent persons accused of crimes.
