Elections will be conducted by the Iowa Judicial Branch State Court Administrator in December and January to select attorneys to serve on county Magistrate Appointing Commissions (in December) and the State Judicial Nominating Commission (in January).
In order to vote in both of these elections, attorneys must be: • a member of the Iowa bar eligible to practice (active practice not required); • a resident of Iowa; • a resident of the congressional election district (for State Judicial Nominating Commission); • a resident of the county (for Magistrate Appointing Commission); and • on the list of attorneys certified by the State Court Administrator pursuant to Iowa Code §46.8.
Election ballots are generated for eligible attorneys based on the county (for Magistrate Appointing Commissioner elections) and congressional district (for State Judicial Nominating Commissioner elections) of their current home addresses. To ensure you receive the correct ballot in the upcoming elections, make sure your home address currently on file with the Commission on Continuing Legal Education and the Client Security Commission is correct by Friday, Oct. 16.
Check your home address by signing into your OPR lawyer account and looking at the “Maintain Personal Information Screen” to see what address is currently on file. Make sure that you have the correct county on file as well. If you need assistance updating your home address or county, contact the Office of Professional Regulation at (515) 348-4670 during normal business hours. Additional notices and information about these elections will be provided at a later date.
