Beginning March 22, Gov. Reynolds declaredthat the in-person requirement for notarizing documents in Iowa is temporarily waived for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency, subject to guidance provided by Secretary of State Paul Pate. Secretary Pate has now issued that guidance, and it can be viewed by clicking here.
These are temporary guidelines that apply during the emergency waiver of the in-person requirement. A formal set of more-stringent provisions (the new remote notary law) is currently scheduled to take effect on July 1. As that date approaches, the Secretary of State will be re-evaluating what the changeover will look like and how to make the transition as smooth as possible.
