Beginning March 22, Gov. Reynolds declared that the in-person requirement for notarizing documents in Iowa is temporarily waived for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency, subject to guidance provided by Secretary of State Paul Pate. Secretary Pate has now issued that guidance, and it can be viewed by clicking here.

A press release from the Secretary of State on this topic can be found here.

These are temporary guidelines that apply during the emergency waiver of the in-person requirement. A formal set of more-stringent provisions (the new remote notary law) is currently scheduled to take effect on July 1. As that date approaches, the Secretary of State will be re-evaluating what the changeover will look like and how to make the transition as smooth as possible.
