New ethics opinion informs on best practices for client selection and case processing

The ISBA Ethics and Practice Guidelines Committee issued a new opinion on Dec. 10 that is now posted on the ISBA website.

It introduces a system known as "CHELP" to protect the client and lawyer from the risk of inadvertency. CHELP is an acronym which stands for: Conflicts, History, Evaluation, Limitations and Plan. The details of each step are outlined in the opinion.

The Ethics and Practice Guidelines Committee was created at the request of the Iowa Supreme Court. Its purpose is to issue opinions regarding matters of ethics, and to give assistance to the practicing bar through practice guidelines. You can read other opinions issued by the committee here.
