RECORDINGS OF PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICERS ON DUTY (LIVE WEBINAR)
March 12, 2018
12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
Speaker: Skylar Limkemann, Scheldrup Blades PC
By the nature of their jobs, police officers will be involved in critical incidents, such as officer involved shootings, use of force incidents, and motor vehicle collisions. As more police officers are equipped with body worn cameras, officers capture more video and audio in the performance of their duties, including critical incidents. But these recordings come with a plethora of legal and public policy issues that dominate the landscape and present a number of difficult issues for lawyers and officers.
This session will address issues with officers’ recordings, including whether officers should be permitted to review their recordings in advance of a criminal interview or an internal affairs interview, issues with requests for copies of officers’ recordings, and issues with public scrutiny of officers’ recordings and departments’ handling of freedom of information requests. Additionally, this session will present an overview of current issues with public safety officers’ on duty recordings, including departments’ policies and procedures and pitfalls to avoid, issues with the recordings themselves, and a recent study regarding body cameras.

Held each year in June, the conference brings over 1,000 legal professionals together under one roof to gain insight and knowledge from peers and experts in the field.
We are very fortunate to be joined by plenary speaker Prof. Todd Pettys at this year’s conference. On Monday, June 18, Prof. Pettys, H. Blair and Joan V. White Chair in Civil Litigation, University of Iowa College of Law, will take center stage at Iowa’s largest legal conference.
