Authors, inventors, artists, business owners, and more—all have intellectual properties at stake, and divorces happen to all manner of individuals. This presentation will examine the intellectual property issues that could arise in the event of a dissolution of marriage. This will include a review of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets, the ownership of those various properties, and how the interests are divided when divorce happens.

We will run this presentation through an extended hypothetical relationship from before meeting to marriage to divorce, contemplating a variety of intellectual property-implicating scenarios. We will identify matters that could arise, including what happens if a little musical prodigy is born and has already created their first Billboard Chart topper before the age of 18.

This presentation is intended to help practitioners know how to identify when an issue with intellectual property needs to be addressed within the marital context and to properly advise clients.
