Human factors is the scientific study of the capabilities and limitations of people and how people interact with and make use of products and systems in their environments. The Human Factors practice at Exponent evaluates human performance and safety under a variety of scenarios. We apply scientific literature and design studies that speak to the ways in which human memory, attention, perception, age, and physical size and ability can affect interaction with products and the environment. We often examine these interactions with an eye towards identifying potential errors and/or accident patterns and scenarios. Utilizing case studies we will discuss examples of how this work can assist in legal matters.

Topics discussed will include the role perception and visibility in automobile accidents, with examples regarding attention, distraction, lighting, and reaction time to respond. In addition, we will discuss a case study which evaluated the capabilities and limitations of children and the role and science of supervision in child safety. Finally, we will review the science on warnings and safety information with an eye towards understanding when someone might consult such safety information.
