Does the benefit of ease of use outweigh the danger of false positives when the result can be termination of parental rights or incarceration? Hair and sweat testing often provides the correct answer but they are sometimes wrong. How can you tell the difference?

Dr. David Kidwell conducted several studies at the Naval Research Laboratories when the federal government was exploring the use of hair and sweat patch testing for federal employees and military personnel. As a result of those studies, the government declined to use these alternative testing technologies for federal employees and military personnel -- a policy which is unchanged to date. However, recently the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, which oversees about 7 million individuals subject to federal testing requirements, has proposed to allow hair testing as an adjunct to urinalysis. Sweat will eventually also be considered. Thus, knowing the limitations of these alternative matrices is essential for the correct application of justice.
