The Iowa Supreme Court is considering adoption of the updated ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct by amending Chapter 32 of the Iowa Rules of Professional Conduct. Prior to taking action, the supreme court seeks public comment on the amendments.

This presentation, sponsored by the ISBA Ethics and Practice Guidelines Committee, will brief you on the substantive changes.

Here are nine changes that could affect the way you practice law and market your law firm:

  • 32:3.8 (Special Responsibilities of a Prosecutor)
  • 32:5.5 (Unauthorized Practice of Law; Multi-jurisdictional Practice of Law)
  • 32:7.1 (Communications Concerning a Lawyer's Services)
  • 32:7.2 (formerly, Advertising)
  • 32:7.3 (Solicitation of Clients)
  • 32:7.4 (formerly, Communication of Fields of Practice and specialization)
  • 32:7.5 (formerly, Firm Names and Letterheads)
  • 32:8.4 (Misconduct)
  • 32:8.5 (Disciplinary Authority; Choice of Law)

The Iowa Supreme Court has set the comment deadline at 4:30 pm on September 30, 2019. Your email comments must be sent to, must state "Chapter 32 Amendments" in the subject line of the email, and must be sent as an attachment to the email in Microsoft Word format.

Instead of submission by email, comments may be delivered in-person or mailed to the Clerk of the Iowa Supreme Court, 1111 East Court Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, 50319.
