This presentation will explain the administrative and investigative processes and applicable law related to Medicaid providers being investigated for Medicaid overpayments or fraud.

Hear from Iowa’s governmental attorneys on how the State approaches Medicaid overpayment and concerns of fraud, waste and abuse. In the oversight of the State’s Medicaid program, two State offices cooperate in the potential administrative, civil and criminal recovery actions. Healthcare providers and their attorneys need to know the different procedures and implications. Gain useful insights into the government’s processes and how to respond.

Lisa Reel Schmidt, Assistant Attorney General, Iowa Medicaid Enterprise

Tricia Dieleman in an Assistant Attorney General with the Iowa Attorney General’s office and is assigned to the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) within the Iowa Department of Inspections & Appeals. She advises the MFCU on criminal and civil investigations regarding Medicaid provider fraud and dependent adult abuse occurring within health care facilities. She also represents the State of Iowa and MFCU in global qui tam cases, wherein whistleblowers allege multi-state or national health care providers have submitted false claims to the Medicaid program.

Lisa Reel Schmidt
is an Assistant Attorney General with the Iowa Attorney General’s office and represents the Iowa Medicaid Enterprise (IME). She works with IME’s Program Integrity Unit, which is the division assigned to investigating fraud, waste, and abuse and implementing administrative recoveries and sanctions.
