On Tuesday, September 17, The Iowa State Bar Association will host a free public event as part of the “ISBA People’s Law School” series.

This event will be held at the ISBA Headquarters at 625 E. Court Ave. in Des Moines from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. and live-streamed to local communities throughout the state. Please include your location preference with your registration. People who register in advance will receive an event reminder with additional location information.

The September 17 event will focus on Iowa's child custody laws. Topics to be discussed include:

  • An overview of the two types of child custody in Iowa
  • Information on how child custody is decided in a divorce
  • Examples of how child custody agreements may be modified
  • Resources available to parents who are divorcing or seeking to change an existing custody agreement


Anjie Shutts, Attorney, Whitfield & Eddy

Anjie has been a member of the Iowa bar since 1996. A member of Whitfield & Eddy, where she has practiced since 1996, Anjie practices exclusively in family law and is a member of the Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. Anjie was voted vice president of the Iowa State Bar Association for 2019—2020, is a member of the Iowa Family Law Case Processing Reform Task Force Steering Committee and the Iowa State Judicial Nominating Commission for Polk County. In 2016, Anjie was named as vice-chair to the Iowa Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission.

This free event is for the public. There will be video and audio recording taken during this event at the ISBA Headquarters, as well as photographs. The ISBA may use the recordings in future publications and presentations, upload them to the ISBA website or present them in other media.
