Your membership includes an invitation in many exciting networking events and continuing legal education programs, designed to help you feel at home in your new profession. Get involved today! Contact ISBA Membership Director Mary Hill at 515-697-7870 or to join a committee or section today!

The Young Lawyers Division
The Young Lawyers Division of The Iowa State Barristers are lawyers who are members of the ISBA and who are under 36 years of age or who have been practicing law fewer than ten years. Probably no other association and group of young attorneys work harder or have a more diverse list of public service opportunities than those right here in Iowa. While providing valuable and appreciated public service, these young lawyers have fun enjoying each other and enjoying serving others. Become involved in many membership and community service projects, such as the Mock Trial Program, Know Your Constitution Project, or one of the many other Law Related Education activities sponsored by the YLD. AS a newly admitted member of the ISBA you automatically become a member of the YLD.

Court Appointed Cases
In most cases, to be appointed as a court-appointed counsel representing indigent persons in criminal, juvenile delinquency, child welfare (CINA/TPR), contempt, and post-conviction relief cases, attorneys need to have a contract with the State Public Defender. After entering into a contract, the attorney’s name will be included on the list of court-appointed attorneys provided to the relevant courts, which make the appointments. Attorneys are paid on the court-appointed cases by submitted fee claims to the State Public Defender. More information on the contracting and fee-claim processes is available on the State Public Defender’s website.
