Pro Bono Opportunities Around Iowa
Share |

Summer is quickly drawing to a close. School is starting around the state and the leaves on the trees will soon begin to change their colors. Unfortunately, the need for legal assistance does not go through seasonal changes. The needs of Iowans for access to justice remain all year long.

Collectively as a profession, we can join together and address the needs of our state’s most vulnerable citizens. Each of us can make a difference in the life of one person who is seeking access to justice. The ISBA Access to Justice Committee has laid out this expectation for all Iowa lawyers.

With this in mind, the best way to meet the legal needs of low income Iowans is to actually roll up our sleeves and do the work. Therefore, we are embarking on an endeavor with a grand aspirational goal. The goal: "Every client who is waiting for a volunteer, will get an attorney to assist them.”

To accomplish this, we need your assistance. This project will consist of a list of all the cases that are currently waiting to be placed by one of the VLP programs in the state. There are more than 150 cases awaiting your attention. Several have already been placed. Please take a look at the cases that are available in your county or area and consider volunteering to take one. When you find a case that you are willing to accept, simply click on the link which will connect you to the email of the placement program responsible for the case. Indicate in your email the case that you are willing to accept. You will be contacted directly by that program with the details of the case that you have selected.

The list of cases will be updated to show the progress in meeting our goal of 100% placement. You will receive frequent emails and information through the Iowa Lawyer Weekly during the next several weeks. This project is a coordinated effort of all the pro bono programs in Iowa. Please consider how you can make a difference in the life of an Iowan in need of access to justice.

If you have any question about Pro Bono and this project, contact Brett Toresdahl at the ISBA Public Service Project, 515-244-8617 or contact your local pro bono projects. They are: Polk County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (Carol Burdette, Executive Director, at 515-243-3904), Iowa Legal Aid Volunteer Lawyers Project (Julie Hernandez, Coordinator, at 800-798-0311), and Pro Bono Project of HELP Legal Assistance and the Scott and Clinton County Bar Associations (Bob Heimer, Deputy Director, at 563-322-6216). This list does not currently contain cases from the Clinton or Scott County area.

Take a look at the list and select a case! Thank you for your commitment to "access to justice”!
