Most of the speakers who addressed the 130 new lawyers who were admitted to the Iowa Bar yesterday stressed the importance of finding a mentor who can guide them through the intricacies of law practice. Iowa Board of Law Examiners Chair Lora McCollom, Iowa Supreme Court Justice Brent Appel, ISBA President Skip Kenyon, YLD President Reed McManigal and Iowa Legal Aid Executive Director Dennis Groenenboom all provided bits of advice for the new attorneys during the 1 ½-hour ceremony.

"Keep your mind and heart open to learning to be a better lawyer,” McCollom said. "Don’t be afraid to re-invent yourself – to try different things,” Kenyon told the group, citing his own career experiences as an example.

"Each of you has the capacity to be a great lawyer,” said Justice Appel. He stressed the importance of accuracy and diligence, and punctuated the message with quotes from Daniel Webster and Abraham Lincoln. He also advised the new attorneys to confront mistakes and fix them, rather than disavowing them. The latter approach always leads to trouble down the road, he said.

The new lawyers and their families were treated to a reception following the swearing-in and distribution of certificates. The YLD also hosted a gathering for the lawyers and their families at the bar office from 3-5 p.m.
