How to Set an Ethical Fee (Live Webinar)
12:00 - 1:00 PM
Iowa R. Prof’l Conduct 32:1.5 governs legal fees. It describes the nature and type of fee and items to take into consideration when setting the fee. But is it conspicuously silent with regard to the amount of the fee. Iowa Supreme Court Atty. Disciplinary Bd. v. Laing, 832 N.W.2d 366, 2013 Iowa Sup. LEXIS 74, 2013 WL 2710906 (Iowa 2013) tells us what happens when we get it wrong. But how do we get it right? How much is too much? Is there an ethical problem when we charge too little? Do we run afoul of Rule 32:1.1 or the supervisory requirements of Rule 32:5.5?
This session will explore how to ethically determine the value of your services. What are your legal services really worth in the market place, how you measure it, and can you ethically charge it.
In putting this webinar together, Ethics Committee Chairman Nick Critelli has called upon the expertise of the committee’s newest member – past ISBA President David Beckman who is also a CPA. We’ve asked him to charge up his calculator and give us some real numbers.
