This CLE will provide an overview of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), as amended by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act in 2009. The presenters will discuss what constitutes protected health information, which individuals and entities qualify ascovered entities or business associates, the basics of business associate agreements, the basic protections a covered entity or business associate must implement to safeguard the security and privacy of protected health information, and the risks for noncompliance.
