The Iowa State Bar Association Rolls Up Its Sleeves To Improve Access To Justice Through Pro Bono Legal Service

Our annual Pro Bono Celebration is scheduled for the month of October. The celebration is a coordinated national effort to showcase the great difference that pro bono lawyers make to the nation, its system of justice, its communities and, most of all, to the clients they serve.

Although national in breadth, this celebration provides an opportunity for The Iowa State Bar Association to
commemorate the contributions of Iowa's lawyers. The ISBA Access to Justice Committee also reminds us that the month is also dedicated to the quest for more pro bono volunteers to meet the ever-growing legal needs of this state's most vulnerable citizens.

The Pro Bono Celebration focuses attention to the legal work lawyers do in their communities to improve the lives of their friends and neighbors. One of our nation's guiding principles is "Justice For All”. Iowans of limited means face urgent legal problems such as foreclosures, loss of parental rights, consumer debt, evictions, and lives paralyzed by domestic violence. They have rights; but 80% of the time those rights are lost, because they cannot get the legal help they need to enforce or defend them. To help bridge that "Justice Gap”, Iowa's lawyers last year donated over 15,000 hours of pro bono legal help to the poor, but it was far from enough.

As we take this opportunity to celebrate Pro Bono, let us be mindful that there is more to be done. Collectively as a profession, we can join together and recommit ourselves to serving the needs of our state's most vulnerable citizens. Each of us can make a difference in the life of one person who is seeking access to justice. The ISBA Access to Justice Committee has laid out this expectation for all Iowa lawyers.

With this in mind, The Iowa State Bar Association has determined that the best way to celebrate pro bono is to actually roll up our sleeves and do the work. Therefore, we are embarking on an endeavor with a grand aspirtational goal. The goal: "Every client who is waiting for a volunteer, will get an attorney to assist them.” At the end of the initiative, there should be no files waiting to be placed and no clients who have to go without access to justice.

To accomplish this, we need your assistance. This project will consist of a data base or "master” list of all the cases that are currently waiting to placed by one of the vlp programs in the state. The list is attached to this email for your review. There are over 200 cases awaiting your attention. Please take a look at the cases that are available in your county or area and consider volunteering to take one. When you find a case that you are willing to accept, simply click on the email link which will connect you to the email of the placement program responsible for the case. You will be contacted directly by that program with the details of the case that you have selected.

The "master” list of cases will be updated daily to show the progress in meeting our goal of 100% placement. You will receive frequent emails and information through the Iowa lawyer Weekly during the next several weeks. This initiative is a coordinated effort of all the pro bono programs in Iowa. Please consider how you can make a difference in the life of an Iowan in need of access to justice.

If you have any question about Pro Bono and this project, contact Brett Toresdahl at the ISBA Public Service Project, 515-244-8617 or contact your local pro bono projects. They are: Polk County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (Carol Burdette, Executive Director, at 515-243-3904), Iowa Legal Aid Volunteer Lawyers Project (Julie Hernandez, Coordinator, at 800-798-0311), and Pro Bono Project of HELP Legal Assistance and the Scott and Clinton County Bar Associations (Bob Heimer, Deputy Director, at 563-322-6216).

Take a look at the list and select a case! Thank you for your commitment to "access to justice”!
